X Flags Suspected Chinese Campaign Targeting U.S. AI Debate

X says it found a very large group of accounts suspected of being linked to China.

The group reportedly had about 200,000 accounts, but only around 200 were described as posting messages about U.S. AI and energy policy.

Those messages said data centers could make electricity more expensive and put pressure on the power grid.

Some posts used cartoons to suggest that companies profit while ordinary people pay.

OpenAI previously reported finding China-linked accounts spreading similar ideas.

However, this does not prove that all Americans who oppose data centers are being influenced by China.

Many people have their own concerns about electricity, the environment and local communities.

Other people support data centers because they can bring jobs, investment and tax money.

U.S. officials also disagree about whether slowing AI development could help China compete with the United States.
