Lawyer Seeks 30% Women's Reservation in 2026 Bar Council of Delhi Polls
A lawyer named Vani Singhal has asked the Supreme Court to make sure that 30% of the seats in the upcoming Bar Council of Delhi elections are reserved for women.
Right now, there are no women in the 25-member council.
The lawyer says this will help more women have a say in important decisions.
The Supreme Court has already ordered similar reservations for other bar associations.
The court will decide on this request on December 1, 2024.
Advocate Vani Singhal has petitioned the Supreme Court for 30% reservation of seats for women in the 2026 Bar Council of Delhi elections.
The Bar Council of Delhi currently has no women members out of 25, with only two women members since its establishment in 1961.
Singhal's plea seeks eight seats for women in the upcoming elections, similar to previous Supreme Court directives for other bar associations.
The Supreme Court had earlier ordered reservations for women in the Delhi High Court Bar Association and district bar associations.
The matter will be heard on December 1, 2024, before the bench of the Chief Justice of India.
