AAU-developed bao rice gains global acceptance
The Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has developed a special kind of red rice called bao rice.
This rice is very strong and can grow well even in tough weather conditions.
It is also grown without any chemicals, making it very healthy.
The AAU has created five new types of bao rice that give more rice per plant and can handle floods better.
In 2025, they sent 265 tonnes of this rice to Russia and Dubai.
The university held a big fair in 2026 to show off these new rice types to farmers and other people interested in agriculture.
They also talked about how important it is to support farmers and teach them new ways to grow crops.
AAU developed improved varieties of bao rice, exported 265 tonnes to Russia and Dubai in 2025.
Five improved varieties showcased at the ‘Mega Farmers’ Fair–2026’ in Jorhat.
Bao rice is climate-resilient, organically grown, and rich in iron, zinc, and antioxidants.
Improved varieties offer higher yields, better flood resistance, and lower disease susceptibility.
The fair featured agricultural exhibitions, training programs, and farmer–scientist interactions.
