IIT Bombay Students Seek Mental Health and Welfare Reforms

Sahil Wakode was a second-year engineering student at IIT Bombay.

He was found hanging in his hostel room on September 18.

After his death, students protested and asked the institute to improve how it supports students.

They want better mental-health care, stronger psychiatric support, and more student involvement in decisions.

Wakode’s parents also complained about alleged caste discrimination and harassment.

This led to a police case against a professor.

Some students said the caste-discrimination reports were wrong and that Professor Suryanarayana Doolla should not be targeted.

Other students said actions taken during his earlier administrative role made students feel afraid.

Students also discussed academic stress as a possible factor, while the exact reason for Wakode’s death was not established in the report.
