Indonesia Halts Operations of Three Companies After Deadly Floods
Indonesia has stopped the work of three companies in Sumatra.
The government wants to check if these companies' activities made the recent floods and landslides worse.
These disasters have killed more than 800 people and left 500 missing.
The companies will have to go to the capital, Jakarta, to explain what happened.
The government might take legal action if they find any wrongdoing.
Additionally, the forestry ministry is looking into 12 more companies and might take away their permits to use forest land.
Indonesia suspended operations of PT Agincourt Resources, PT Perkebunan Nusantara III, and PT North Sumatera Hydro Energy in Sumatra.
The government ordered an environmental audit and summoned the companies to Jakarta for questioning on December 8.
Aerial inspections revealed massive land clearing upstream, potentially increasing flood and landslide risks.
More than 800 people have died, and 500 remain missing due to the floods and landslides in northern and western Sumatra.
The forestry ministry is investigating 12 companies and plans to revoke permits for 750,000 hectares of land.
