Delhi Police Files FIR Against X Handles Over Anti‑Modi Posts
Delhi Police, the police force in India’s capital, said they were looking into some posts on the social media app X that were insulting the country’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
They made a formal complaint, called an FIR, against about seven or eight accounts that were said to have posted mean and false messages.
The police asked X to take down those posts within three hours and to keep all the data about the accounts for the investigation.
The posts were connected to a protest on July 20 called Sansad Chalo, which was led by a group called the Cockroach Janta Party.
During that protest, many people were hurt – about 65 protestors and more than 200 police officers.
Some student groups, who were also part of the protest, said the police were trying to arrest them and that the police action was too harsh.
They held a protest at a place called Jantar Mantar to speak out.
The police said they were only acting on evidence and not targeting the protest.
The whole situation shows how social media and protests can lead to legal action.
Delhi Police filed an FIR against 7–8 X handles for allegedly posting derogatory, malicious and defamatory content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The FIR was registered under Sections 351(3), 353(2) and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
Delhi Police issued notices to X directing removal or disabling of the posts within three hours and preservation of all related electronic records and subscriber details.
The posts were linked to the July 20 Sansad Chalo protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party, during which at least 65 protesters and over 200 police personnel were injured.
The action triggered protests by left‑affiliated student organisations at Jantar Mantar, who alleged a broader crackdown on anti‑paper‑leak movement participants.
