Jammu and Kashmir Politicians Challenge Bureaucrats’ Assembly Role

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly voted to ask for statehood to be restored.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said two senior government officials had asked the Speaker not to discuss the proposal.

He said elected members, rather than officials, should decide what the Assembly debates.

The officials reportedly argued that the issue was before the Supreme Court.

Most political parties criticised their involvement, while the BJP opposed the resolution and its leader called for the Speaker to resign.

A legislator proposed a formal complaint, which the Speaker admitted for consideration.

The article says it could go to a committee that examines possible breaches of Assembly privilege.

It also reports that elected leaders have previously complained that officials are less responsive since Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory.
