Falling Vaccination Rates Could Drive Global Measles Surge in 2026

Measles is a virus that can make people very sick, especially children who are not vaccinated.

The World Health Organization estimates that almost 11 million people may get measles in 2026.

Most cases are expected in Africa and Asia, but outbreaks are also happening in Europe and the Americas.

Vaccines are safe and help prevent measles.

Communities usually need more than 95% of people vaccinated to stop the virus from spreading widely.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many children missed routine vaccinations.

Some poorer countries still have not been able to vaccinate all of those children.

Bangladesh has had especially serious shortages and has reported more than 900 deaths.

In other places, including parts of the Americas, vaccine hesitancy has helped outbreaks grow.
