Misnaming of Manipur’s state animal Sangai in Wildlife Act
A well-known environmentalist from Manipur, Dr. Khangembam Shamungou Singh, is worried because the state's special animal, the Sangai deer, is called 'Thamin' in a important law called the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
The Sangai is a special kind of deer that is in danger of disappearing, and it is protected by this law.
Dr. Shamungou talked about this problem at a big science meeting called the Manipur Science Congress 2025.
Other people also gave talks about how science and technology can help in the future and how to deal with climate change.
Almost 300 people from different places came to this meeting.
The governor of Manipur started the meeting, and there were awards and books given out.
Dr. Khangembam Shamungou Singh raised concern over the misnaming of Sangai as 'Thamin' in the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
Sangai, the state animal of Manipur, is a critically endangered deer species (Rucervus eldii eldii) protected under Schedule I of the Act.
The issue was discussed during the Manipur Science Congress 2025 at Manipur University, Imphal.
Other presentations included topics on science, technology, and climate change impact and mitigation strategies.
The three-day science congress was inaugurated by the state Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and attended by nearly 300 delegates.

“"Sangai is the state animal which is a critically endangered deer species (Rucervus eldii eldii) and protected under Schedule I of India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. However, it was named as ‘Thamin’ instead of Sangai under the WildLife (Protection) Act 1972 of the country."”
