Germany Grants Record Citizenship with Legal Reforms
Germany gave citizenship to a record number of people in 2024, nearly 292,000!
This is because the rules changed to make it easier.
People from Syria, Russia, and Turkey were a big part of this.
The new rules meant people could become citizens quicker and keep their other citizenships.
This has led to many more people applying.
Germany saw a record 291,955 naturalizations in 2024, a 46% increase from 2023.
The surge was mainly driven by Syrians, Russians, and Turks gaining citizenship.
New Citizenship Law Modernisation Act made it easier for long-term residents to become citizens.
The law reduced residency requirements and allowed dual nationality in most cases.
Russians saw the sharpest percentage increase, with naturalizations rising over sixfold.
