Teacher Fights Child Labour in Assam
In a small village in Assam, a dedicated teacher named Lutfur Rahman has been working hard to bring back children who have left school to work in brick kilns.
Many families in the area are very poor and move to other places to find work, taking their children with them.
These children often have to work instead of going to school.
Mr. Rahman has helped more than 40 children return to school.
He talks to the families and explains how important education is.
The government is also trying to help by providing meals and books to the children.
Even though there are still many challenges, Mr. Rahman's efforts show how one person can make a big difference.
Lutfur Rahman, a headmaster in Lakhimpur, Assam, has helped over 40 children return to school from child labour.
Children from economically distressed families are often taken to brick kilns in other districts, disrupting their education.
Rahman's interventions include persuading parents and coordinating with local social workers to re-enrol children.
Assam's dropout rate at the lower primary level has declined from 6.2% to 3.8% according to the UDISE+ 2024–25 report.
The issue of child labour in Assam is part of a wider problem, with families often migrating due to hunger and poverty.
