Greta Gerwig Explains Casting Meryl Streep As Narnia’s Aslan
Greta Gerwig is making a new Narnia movie for Netflix.
Meryl Streep will provide the voice of Aslan, a powerful lion in the story.
Aslan is the true king of the magical land of Narnia.
Gerwig chose Streep because she can sound wise, emotional, joyful, and full of wonder.
Gerwig also wanted someone older than 70 who could bring wisdom from experience.
The movie is based on C.S. Lewis’ book The Magician’s Nephew.
That book tells how Aslan created Narnia long before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The film will play in IMAX in February 2027 and arrive on Netflix in April 2027.
Meryl Streep will voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew.
The film will premiere in IMAX on February 12, 2027, before its Netflix debut on April 2.
Gerwig wanted an actor with gravitas, emotional depth, joy, and fresh wonder.
She said the ideal performer needed to be over 70 and among the greatest actors ever.
The Magician’s Nephew depicts Aslan’s creation of Narnia and is chronologically the first Narnia story.
