India Updates CPI to Include Modern Goods
India is updating its Consumer Price Index (CPI) to include more modern items like air purifiers, streaming services, and protein powder.
This change is based on a recent survey of what people are buying.
The new CPI will have more services and fewer food items, which should make the inflation measure more stable.
Some old items like VHS tapes are being removed.
This update is part of a bigger effort to make India's economic statistics more accurate and up-to-date.
The new CPI will be released for the first time on February 12, 2024.
India's new CPI will include modern goods like air purifiers, streaming services, and protein powder.
The CPI basket will expand to 358 goods and services from 299, with a greater emphasis on services.
Food and beverages' weight in the CPI will decrease from 45.86% to 36.75%.
Outdated items like audio and video cassettes will be removed from the CPI basket.
The new CPI, with 2024 as the base year, will be released for the first time on February 12, 2024.
