Bamboo Shrimp Rediscovered in India After 72 Years
Scientists in India found a special kind of shrimp called the bamboo shrimp after a very long time.
They first saw it 72 years ago, but it was hard to find again.
The shrimp lives in places where fresh and salty water mix, like near mangroves.
The scientists had to look in many places for two years before they found it.
They think this shrimp is different from another similar one because it can live in different kinds of water.
The shrimp is also sold in stores for fish tanks, but it's not easy to keep in captivity.
The scientists say we need to protect these shrimps because they are in danger from things like building bridges and taking sand from rivers.
Bamboo shrimp (Atyopsis spinipes) rediscovered in Karnataka and Odisha after 72 years.
Research team included specialists from the Centre for Climate Change Studies, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology.
Shrimp is a filter feeder, previously found in Southeast Asia, and popular in the aquarium hobby.
Rediscovery began in 2022 after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha found a mature specimen.
Researchers noted the species' ability to tolerate salt and temperature changes, aiding its wide distribution.
