Court Blocks Trump Administration Access to 17 Million Driver Records

Court Blocks Trump Administration Access to 17 Million Driver Records

A judge has temporarily stopped the federal government from getting a large database about commercial drivers.

The database contains private information, including Social Security and driving licence numbers.

More than 17 million drivers could be affected.

The records are kept for states by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

Virginia and other states sued several federal agencies over the request.

The states say the agencies want to create a separate database without enough privacy protections.

The judge also stopped the government from cutting more than $10 million in funding to the association over the dispute.

The federal government’s position was not included in the released court material.

The case will continue while the states seek a longer-lasting court order.
