Experts Advocate Contextual Policymaking for India
Experts had a meeting in Chennai to talk about how India's economy is different from other countries.
They said that when making rules for the economy, we need to consider things like how fast cities are growing, how much prices are going up, and how jobs are changing.
One expert said that the goal for how much the economy should grow might need to be changed to make it more realistic.
Another expert suggested that retired people should have their own way of measuring how much prices are going up, because they spend money differently.
They also talked about how the news should help explain these rules to everyone in a way that's easy to understand.
Experts emphasized the need for contextual policymaking considering India's unique economic dynamics.
Ravindra Dholakia proposed revising growth targets to 4-5% with a tolerance band of 3-7% for realistic inflation targeting.
Dholakia suggested that a more balanced assessment by rating agencies could have prevented rapid exchange rate depreciation.
V Kumaraswamy proposed a separate pensioners' inflation index reflecting their lower exposure to housing, commute, and dietary costs.
Lokeshwarri SK highlighted the media's role in interpreting and conveying policies lucidly, suggesting RBI policies be translated into regional languages.
