French Court Jails Congo Ex-Rebel Leader for 30 Years
A French court has sentenced a former Congolese rebel leader, Roger Lumbala, to 30 years in prison for his role in serious crimes during a war in Congo.
These crimes include things like torture, killings, and forcing people to work.
The war, which happened from 1998 to 2003, involved many countries and caused a lot of suffering.
This is the first time someone from Congo has been tried in a national court for these kinds of crimes.
The trial is important because it shows that people can be held responsible for their actions, even if the crimes happened in another country.
Victims of the crimes are happy with the decision and hope it will stop others from doing similar things in the future.
Roger Lumbala, a Congolese ex-rebel leader, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a Paris court for complicity in crimes against humanity.
The crimes were committed during the 'Erasing the Board' operation in 2002-2003, targeting members of the Nande and Bambuti groups in northeastern Congo.
This is the first time a Congolese national has been tried in a national court for crimes related to the Second Congo War (1998-2003).
The trial was based on France's universal jurisdiction law, allowing French courts to address crimes against humanity committed abroad.
Victims of the crimes, including a nurse from eastern Congo, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, hoping it will deter future atrocities.
