India's Natural Disaster Deaths Hit Decade High
Imagine India is like a playground and sometimes has wild weather like floods or landslides.
More people died from these events last year than in any of the last ten years.
Even though damage to houses and crops went down, more people lost their lives.
Experts believe this is because some areas are not as prepared for these events, like some kids have better ways to stay safe than others.
The government is trying to help with warnings, but it's important to also focus on helping people in vulnerable regions.
India experienced 3,080 deaths from extreme natural events in 2024-25, the highest in a decade.
This is a 17% increase compared to 2,616 deaths in 2023-24 and higher than the FY15-FY24 average of 1,893.
Himachal Pradesh reported over 400 deaths in 2024, mainly from landslides and flash floods.
Economic damage such as house and crop damage declined, but fatalities rose.
Experts suggest lower human development levels in vulnerable regions impact the number of fatalities.
