Aadhaar and Voter Rolls: Concerns over Illegal Immigrant Inclusions
India is checking its voter lists because some people think that illegal immigrants were wrongly added.
It all started with a plan to create a national ID card.
Later, a system called Aadhaar was created to give everyone an ID, even if they weren't citizens.
However, there were some issues with how people were signed up, with concerns raised over documents.
Now, there's a special review of voter lists to fix these issues and make sure only eligible people can vote, which has led to the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The goal is to keep India's democracy fair.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar argues that the current voter roll revision is vital.
Concerns exist over illegal immigrants obtaining Aadhaar cards.
Aadhaar was initially launched for all residents, not just citizens.
Aadhaar enrolments between 2010-2012 lacked proper documentation, according to CAG.
The Modi government strengthened Aadhaar through the Aadhaar Act of 2016.
