Centre Orders Namrup-III Study, Fast-Tracks Namrup-IV
The government wants to make the Namrup-III fertilizer plant work better.
They asked a company called PDIL to check the plant and suggest improvements.
The government also wants to build a new, bigger plant called Namrup-IV quickly.
This new plant will make a lot of fertilizer to help farmers in the Northeast and even send some to other countries.
The government is trying to make sure India can make enough fertilizer on its own.
The Union Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizer has ordered a performance study of the Namrup-III plant by PDIL to identify and rectify weak areas.
The Parliamentary Committee on Chemical and Fertilizer recommended remedial measures for Namrup-III and fast-tracking the commissioning of Namrup-IV.
Namrup-IV, with an annual capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tons, aims to meet urea demands and reduce subsidy burdens.
The new plant will serve farmers in the Northeast and potentially export to Bhutan and Myanmar, also benefiting markets in West Bengal and Bihar.
The committee noted a significant gap between urea consumption (388 LMT in 2024-25) and indigenous production (307 LMT in 2024-25), with projected consumption rising to 444 LMT by 2035-36.
