India’s Crude Basket Now Tracks Brent More Closely
India uses a special measure to track the price of the crude oil its refineries buy.
That measure is called the Indian crude basket.
It used to be based mostly on Oman-Dubai oil.
From March, it became based more on Dated Brent oil.
This change better matches where more of India’s oil comes from and how it is priced.
The basket now follows Brent prices more closely.
In early September, the basket’s average price was higher than in August.
When futures prices fall, Indian refiners may not feel the benefit right away.
The drop may also reach them only partly until physical oil prices fall.
India’s official crude basket measures the average price of crude imported by Indian refiners.
Until February 2026, the basket was about 79% Oman-Dubai crude and 21% Dated Brent.
From March, the weights shifted to about 61% Dated Brent and 39% Oman-Dubai.
The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell now updates the basket’s ratio every month.
The basket was $115.98 a barrel on September 9 and averaged $104.09 early that month, versus $90.19 in August.
- Who
- Indian refiners and the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell.
- What
- The composition of India’s crude oil basket shifted toward Dated Brent, making the basket track Brent more closely.
- Where
- India; the basket reflects crude imported by Indian refiners, including Oman-Dubai crude from West Asia.
- When
- The weighting changed from March 2026; figures cited include September 9 and the first part of September.
- Why
- The new weights are intended to better reflect India’s larger share of crude purchases from suppliers whose oil is priced off Brent.
Potential price relief
Limits and delay
Effect of easing futures prices
Potential price relief
A decline in oil futures could eventually bring relief to Indian refiners.
Limits and delay
The relief arrives later and only partly until physical prices follow.
