Election Commission Extends SIR Deadline
The Election Commission of India has extended the deadline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to February 14, 2025.
This extension gives voters more time to ensure their names are correctly included in the voter list.
The draft list will be published on December 16, 2024.
The SIR aims to enhance the accuracy and inclusiveness of the voter list ahead of upcoming elections.
The extension also addresses the pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs), who have been working to complete the task within a tight schedule.
Some BLOs have reportedly died by suicide due to work-related stress.
The opposition parties have urged the Election Commission to reschedule the SIR exercise and have demanded a discussion on the issue in Parliament.
The government is planning to introduce several legislative bills during the Winter Session of Parliament, which starts on December 16, 2024.
The Election Commission extended the SIR deadline to February 14, 2025, to give voters more time to verify and correct their details.
The draft voter list will be published on December 16, 2024, a week later than initially scheduled.
The SIR aims to enhance the accuracy and inclusiveness of the voter list ahead of upcoming elections in 12 states and Union Territories.
The extension addresses the pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs), with reports of suicides due to work-related stress in several states.
Opposition parties have urged the Election Commission to reschedule the SIR exercise and have demanded a discussion on the issue in Parliament.
