Reliance Resumes Russian Oil Purchases
Reliance Industries, a big company in India, has started buying Russian oil again after getting special permission from the U.S. The U.S. had rules that stopped companies from buying oil from two big Russian companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, but Reliance had already made some deals before the rules started.
So, they can finish those deals.
Reliance has a huge factory that makes oil into fuel, and they need this Russian oil to keep working.
They will get one more shipment in December and January from another Russian company called RusExport.
The U.S. wants India to buy less Russian oil, but Reliance is allowed to finish their existing contracts.
Reliance has two big factories in Jamnagar, one for selling fuel in India and one for selling fuel to other countries.
They stopped taking Russian oil for the export factory after November 20 and now only use it for the domestic factory.
Reliance Industries resumed purchases of discounted Russian crude from non-sanctioned suppliers and received a one-month extension to take supplies from Rosneft.
The last purchase of sanctioned oil was loaded on November 12, and since November 22, RIL has received around 15 cargoes of Russian oil from Rosneft.
RIL is not using the extension to procure more shipments from Rosneft but to import what was contracted before sanctions came into effect.
Reliance contracted Aframax tankers from RusExport and is routing flows to a 660,000-barrel-a-day plant that supplies domestic customers.
The export-oriented refinery last took a shipment of Russian crude on November 20, and since then, all Russian imports have flowed to its domestic sales-focused refinery.
