India’s Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Shows Signs of Weakening
India has a program that gives people in villages guaranteed work.
The program created fewer jobs last month.
This was the first month after a new version called VB-G RAM G began.
Some people think the weak results could be caused by problems during the changeover.
However, the main system was already in place, so those problems may not explain much of the decline.
The weakness may be part of a longer trend.
People in rural areas still seem to need these jobs.
Other information suggests that many rural households are facing economic difficulty.
Employment generation was weak last month, the first month after VB-G RAM G’s rollout.
The decline may be part of a broader trend rather than a one-time anomaly.
Teething troubles have been suggested as one possible explanation for the weak results.
Because the scheme’s basic apparatus was already in place, implementation problems may not have had a very strong effect.
Rural demand for guaranteed jobs does not appear to have fallen, given distress indicated by other data.
