New York Times Sues Perplexity for Copyright Infringement
The New York Times has sued Perplexity, a generative-AI startup, for copyright infringement.
The Times claims that Perplexity illegally uses its content, including articles, videos, podcasts, and images, without permission.
They say Perplexity repackages original Times stories in its responses to users and even fabricates information, falsely attributing it to the Times.
The Times is asking for damages and wants Perplexity to stop using its content.
This isn't the first time the Times has taken legal action against Perplexity; they sent cease and desist notices in the past.
Other publishers, like the Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, and New York Post, are also suing Perplexity for similar reasons.
Meanwhile, some publishers have chosen to work with AI companies through partnerships and content deals.
The New York Times sued Perplexity for copyright infringement, alleging illegal use of its content, including verbatim or near-verbatim repackaging of articles.
The lawsuit also accuses Perplexity of copyright infringement for its videos, podcasts, and images, and fabricating information falsely attributed to the Times.
The Times seeks damages and injunctive relief, including the removal of its content from Perplexity's products, filed in a New York federal court.
The Chicago Tribune also filed a lawsuit against Perplexity for copyright infringement, joining other publishers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Post.
Perplexity has not immediately responded to requests for comment on the lawsuits, but previously expressed interest in working with publishers.
