New Labeonine Fish Species Discovered in Manipur
Scientists in Manipur have found a new type of fish called Garra nambashiensis!
This fish lives in the Taretlok river.
The fish is about 9-14 cm long and known locally as Nutungnu.
The discovery was made by a team of researchers.
They found the fish in a river that has fast-flowing water and gravel beds.
This new fish is different from other similar fish because of its unique features.
This is not the first time the team has found a new fish, with a previous discovery of Pethia poiensis in 2018.
The new fish species is part of a group of about 60 Garra fish species found in the area.
A new freshwater fish species, Garra nambashiensis, has been identified in Manipur.
The fish was found in the Taretlok river near the Nambashi Valley in Kamjong district.
The research was led by Dr. Bungdon Shangningam of Dhanamanjuri University.
The new species is distinguished by specific physical characteristics including a unique proboscis shape.
The fish is known locally as Nutungnu and ranges in size from 90-140 mm.
