NDAA 2026 Designates India Key Partner
The US Congress has released a new defence bill called the NDAA for 2026.
This bill makes India a very important partner for the US in two big areas: nuclear energy and the Indo-Pacific region.
The bill sets up regular meetings between the US and India to talk about nuclear cooperation and to make sure India's rules for nuclear projects follow international standards.
India is also included in a special group of countries that will work together to make defence products and secure supply chains.
The bill also creates a new job for an ambassador who will focus on the Indian Ocean region to counter China's influence.
The bill is expected to pass this week and will provide $890 billion for the Pentagon and nuclear programs.
This shows that the US sees India as a key player in its plans to manage competition with China.
The fiscal 2026 NDAA designates India as a key partner in US nuclear and Indo-Pacific strategies.
The bill mandates regular US-India consultations on nuclear cooperation and liability rules.
India is included in a new Partnership for Indo-Pacific Industrial Resilience with other key allies.
The NDAA authorizes $890 billion for the Pentagon and nuclear programs, with annual reporting requirements.
A new Ambassador-at-Large for the Indian Ocean Region is created to counter China's influence.
