Indian Markets Slide as US Yields, Oil and Rupee Weaken
Indian stock markets fell sharply on Thursday.
The Sensex lost more than 850 points during the day, and the Nifty fell below 23,150.
Investors were worried because interest rates and government-bond yields in the United States rose.
Higher US yields can make investments there more attractive than investments in emerging markets such as India.
Oil prices also moved above USD 102 per barrel, making imports more expensive for India.
The rupee weakened against the dollar, which can further increase import costs.
Banks and finance companies, including Bajaj Finance, fell heavily.
Insurance stocks also dropped after the regulator proposed changes to insurance distribution rules.
The Sensex and Nifty fell about 1%, with the Sensex down more than 850 points and the Nifty below 23,150 intraday.
The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to roughly 5%-5.11%, its highest level since 2007, increasing concerns about interest rates and emerging markets.
Brent crude rose above USD 102 a barrel, raising concerns about India's import costs, inflation, corporate margins and the rupee.
The rupee weakened 14 paise to 95.87 against the dollar, while financial stocks led losses led by Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank and Bajaj Finserv.
Mid-cap and small-cap indices fell about 1%, while insurance stocks faced additional selling after an IRDAI proposal on distribution costs, commissions and transparency.
