Pakistan Broadens Media Curbs to Local Staff of Foreign Outlets

Pakistan Broadens Media Curbs to Local Staff of Foreign Outlets

Pakistan made a new rule about journalists.

Many news organizations from other countries work in Pakistan.

These reporters often need to travel around the country to report the news.

Under the new rule, Pakistani people who work for foreign news organizations—like journalists, helpers, and video producers—must register with the government.

They also need special permission to travel or report outside three big cities: Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.

Before this rule, only reporters who were citizens of other countries had to follow those travel limits.

The rule comes at a time when there are protests in a part of Kashmir that Pakistan controls, and fighting in some western provinces.

Some groups that protect press freedom, like Human Rights Watch, say the rule is unfair and makes it harder for reporters to do their jobs.

News outlets like the BBC say they are very worried, but Pakistan's government says the rule is meant to help foreign media work, not to stop them from reporting.
