Tamil Nadu to Impose Rs 20 Environmental Cess on Liquor
The state government of Tamil Nadu wants to add a small extra fee to every bottle of alcohol that people buy.
The fee can be up to Rs 20 for each bottle or can.
The money would be used to take care of the environment and help people.
Discarded liquor bottles and packaging can become litter in forests and hurt wildlife.
The government also wants to help people who want to stop drinking alcohol.
Some of the money would help families affected by alcohol problems.
The government calls this a 'cess', which is a kind of extra tax on top of the normal tax.
The plan is part of a new bill that was introduced in the state assembly.
The new fee will only start after the bill becomes law and the government announces a date.

The levy is part of the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introduced by Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister D Logesh Tamilselvan.
The cess will be charged in addition to the existing VAT under a new Section 3-A of the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax Act, 2006.
Revenues are earmarked for recycling and safe disposal of liquor containers, de-addiction programmes, and welfare for families affected by alcohol dependency.
The levy will come into effect from a date to be separately notified by the government after the legislative process is completed.
