Government Confirms No Assessment on E20 Petrol Compliance
The Indian government has stated that no assessment has been conducted to determine the percentage of petrol vehicles in the country that are fully compliant with E20 fuel, which is petrol blended with 20% ethanol.
This announcement was made in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi.
The government and automobile manufacturers claim that E20 petrol is safe for use and that extensive studies and field trials have confirmed its safety.
They argue that E20 offers better performance and lower emissions compared to E10 fuel.
However, opposition parties and consumer groups have raised concerns about the compatibility of older vehicles with E20 petrol, as well as potential reductions in fuel efficiency and higher maintenance costs.
The government has assured that the transition to E20 has been phased and backed by extensive testing, and that manufacturers continue to honor warranty claims for vehicles using E20 fuel.
No assessment has been done on the percentage of petrol vehicles in India that are fully compliant with E20 fuel.
E20 petrol is the standard petrol variant across the country, with 80 parts petrol and 20 parts ethanol.
Vehicles manufactured and sold after April 2023 are considered fully E20-compliant under BS6 phase two emission norms.
The government claims that E20 petrol offers better performance and lower emissions compared to E10 fuel.
Opposition parties and consumer groups have raised concerns about vehicle compatibility, fuel efficiency, and the lack of choice for consumers to opt for pure petrol or lower ethanol blends.

Vehicle Compatibility
Government and Automobile Manufacturers
The government and automobile manufacturers assert that E20 petrol is safe for use and that extensive studies and field trials have confirmed its safety. They claim that legacy vehicles do not exhibit significant performance issues or abnormal wear and tear due to E20 fuel usage.
Opposition Parties and Consumer Groups
Opposition parties and consumer groups question the compatibility of all vehicles with E20 petrol, particularly older vehicles not designed for higher ethanol blends. They seek greater transparency on vehicle compatibility and consumer safeguards.
Fuel Economy and Performance
Government and Automobile Manufacturers
The government and automobile manufacturers argue that E20 petrol offers better acceleration, improved ride quality, and lower carbon emissions compared to E10 fuel. They also claim that any reduction in fuel economy is generally limited to about 3-5% and is outweighed by the benefits of higher octane ratings and cleaner combustion.
Opposition Parties and Consumer Groups
Critics raise concerns about reduced fuel efficiency and higher maintenance costs associated with E20 petrol. They also question the lack of choice for consumers to opt for pure petrol or lower ethanol blends.
