Govt considers raising EPFO, ESIC wage ceiling to ₹30,000
The Indian government is thinking about changing the rules for two important worker benefit programs, EPFO and ESIC.
Right now, workers earning more than ₹15,000 a month can choose whether to join EPFO, and those earning more than ₹21,000 are not covered by ESIC.
The government wants to make these limits the same, between ₹25,000 and ₹30,000.
This change would help more workers get benefits and make the rules fairer.
The Supreme Court has asked the government to make a decision soon.
EPFO helps workers save money for retirement, while ESIC provides health insurance.
There are about 8.5 crore workers in EPFO and 3.25 crore in ESIC, with their families also getting benefits.
The last time these limits were changed was a long time ago, in 2014.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is considering raising and standardising the wage ceilings for EPFO and ESIC to between ₹25,000 and ₹30,000 per month.
The current EPFO wage ceiling is ₹15,000 per month, and the ESIC threshold is ₹21,000 per month.
The proposal aims to align social security thresholds with current wage realities and correct the erosion caused by inflation.
EPFO has around 8.5 crore contributing members, while ESIC covers 3.25 crore insured persons, with a total of 14 crore beneficiaries including family members.
The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to take a decision within 4 months on raising the EPFO wage ceiling, citing substantial wage growth and inflation.
