India's Progress in HIV/AIDS Control
India has made big progress in fighting HIV and AIDS.
From 2010 to 2024, new HIV infections dropped by nearly half, and deaths from AIDS went down by over 80%.
This is better than the global average.
Most people with HIV live in nine states, with Maharashtra having the most.
Some states like Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Meghalaya saw more new cases.
The Meghalaya government is investing ₹25 crore over five years to strengthen testing, treatment, and community programs.
They want to make Meghalaya HIV-free within five years.
In Assam, over 33,000 people are living with HIV, and the rise in injecting drug use is a big concern.
The government is working hard to test more people and provide treatment to those who need it.
India is on track to end HIV-AIDS as a big health problem by 2030.
India saw a 48.7% decline in new HIV infections and an 81.4% reduction in AIDS-related deaths from 2010 to 2024.
Mother-to-child HIV transmission dropped by 74.6% in the same period.
As of 2024, India has approximately 25,61,161 people living with HIV, with Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka having the highest numbers.
Some states, like Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Meghalaya, experienced significant increases in new HIV cases.
Meghalaya is investing ₹25 crore over five years to strengthen HIV/AIDS testing, treatment, and community programs, aiming to be HIV-free within five years.
