Vanguard Warns of Underpriced Japan Yield Risks
Vanguard, a big investment company, thinks that people trading bonds in Japan are not fully considering how much interest rates might need to go up to control inflation.
The Bank of Japan, which sets these rates, might raise them soon.
Even though the rates are still low compared to other countries, Vanguard believes they will need to go higher to manage inflation.
They also think that short-term rates might not go up as much as long-term rates, which could be a good opportunity for investors.
The Japanese government is okay with this rate hike, and traders are now expecting a bigger increase than before.
Vanguard warns traders may underestimate the need for higher Japanese interest rates to control inflation.
The Bank of Japan's two-year government debt yield has risen above 1%, the highest since 2008.
Vanguard is underweight on Japanese government bonds, expecting short-term rates to underperform long-term rates.
Traders now expect a 22 basis point rate hike at the December BOJ meeting, up from 14 basis points a week ago.
The Bank of Japan's neutral rate is estimated to be between 1% and 2.5%, with the current policy rate at 0.50%.
