Modi Hails 7.8% GDP Growth as Congress Challenges Numbers

India’s economy grew by 7.8% during one three-month period.

This was higher than the Reserve Bank of India’s earlier 7% forecast.

Manufacturing and services also grew strongly during the quarter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other government leaders said the result showed that India was resilient despite worldwide problems.

The finance minister said government reforms and economic management helped produce the growth.

The Congress party disagreed with this interpretation.

It said one strong number does not show whether people have enough jobs, better wages or more opportunities.

Congress leaders also pointed to higher prices, weak consumer confidence, falling household savings and rising debt.

The two sides are arguing about whether headline growth reflects everyday economic conditions.
