Finland Joins France’s Nuclear Deterrence Initiative in Europe

Finland has joined a French plan to improve Europe’s nuclear defense cooperation.

The plan is called forward nuclear deterrence.

It allows participating countries to share information and conduct nuclear-related exercises.

French Rafale jets that can carry nuclear weapons could also operate from member countries’ airfields during serious crises.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said the plan could make Europe safer.

He also said it could help countries manage dangerous situations before they become nuclear conflicts.

Finland will create a group with France to organize its participation.

The plan does not replace NATO, according to Stubb.

France would continue to control its own nuclear weapons.
