Bihar Tags Female Greylag Goose for Migration Study
Scientists in Bihar, India, have tagged a female Greylag Goose named Sonbarsa with a special GPS tracker.
This is the first time a bird has been tagged with GPS in Bhagalpur district.
The goose, which travels long distances, will help scientists learn about its journey and where it stops.
This information is important for protecting the wetlands in Bihar.
Earlier, two other geese were tagged in a different part of Bihar, and a rare flamingo was also spotted in the area.
These efforts help scientists understand and protect the birds that visit Bihar.
A female Greylag Goose named Sonbarsa was tagged with a solar-powered GPS-GSM transmitter in Bihar's Bhagalpur district.
This is the first-ever GPS tagging of a bird in Bhagalpur, marking a significant milestone in Bihar's migratory bird research.
The tagging aims to study the goose's migratory movements, including routes, timing, stopover patterns, and habitat use for wetland conservation.
The Greylag Goose travels along the Central Asian Flyway and uses wetlands like Ghatora as stopover or wintering sites.
This effort follows the GPS-GSM tagging of two Bar-headed Geese in Jamui district in February 2024 and the documentation of a juvenile Greater Flamingo in Bhagalpur district in December 2024.
