Angh’s TIFF Platform Bid Opens a Difficult Oscar Path
Angh is a film from Nagaland directed by Theja Rio.
It is competing at the Toronto International Film Festival in a section called Platform.
Angh is the only Indian film in this year’s competition.
If it wins, it will be considered for an Oscar in the international film category.
Winning at TIFF would not automatically give it an Oscar nomination or award.
The film tells the story of a village chief trying to protect his traditions.
His life changes when an American missionary brings new beliefs to the village.
To compete strongly for an Oscar, the film would need a distributor and a large advertising campaign.
The filmmakers have not yet announced when the movie will be released in India.
Angh is the first film from Nagaland selected for the Toronto International Film Festival.
Theja Rio’s film is the only Indian entry in TIFF 2026’s Platform competition.
The Platform Award winner receives $20,000 CAD and Oscar-qualifying consideration.
Angh follows a Konyak chief confronting religious and cultural change in 1960s Nagaland.
An Oscar campaign would require distribution, extensive promotion and potentially Rs 15–100 crore.
