Trump Announces Unprecedented Economic Campaign to Isolate Iran, Warns Allies
Donald Trump says the United States will put very strong economic pressure on Iran.
He called the plan economic warfare and an unprecedented effort to isolate Iran.
Trump warned that countries and organizations helping Iran could also be punished.
He listed oil smuggling, money transfers, exchange houses and front companies as activities that should stop.
The United States already has sanctions against Iran through a campaign called Operation Economic Fury.
Reports say the new pressure could be combined with a US naval blockade.
The Strait of Hormuz, an important route for energy ships, remains heavily disrupted according to several reports, although Trump said it was open.
Trump said Iran had failed to make a deal and would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Iran’s parliament speaker said the waterway would not fully reopen until the United States met earlier commitments.
Donald Trump announced what he called the most extensive economic operation ever imposed against a country, aimed at isolating Iran.
He warned countries, businesses, airports and government entities assisting Iran could face “tremendous economic consequences.”
Trump said the campaign would target oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies.
The effort would add to existing US sanctions under Operation Economic Fury and may accompany a US naval blockade, according to reports.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until US commitments, including sanctions relief, were fulfilled.
