Udupi DC Mandates Rainwater Harvesting for Government Wells
The Udupi Deputy Commissioner (DC) wants the government to collect rainwater to help with the water supply.
Even though it rains a lot, the groundwater level is not as high as it should be because the water runs into the sea.
The DC said that government-owned wells need to start using rainwater harvesting, similar to how farmers do it.
This will help avoid using water trucks to deliver drinking water in areas where water is scarce.
Udupi DC ordered officials to install rainwater harvesting systems in government wells.
The groundwater table is lower than expected despite recent rainfall.
Rainwater is draining into the sea, causing soil erosion.
Farmers and private individuals have widely adopted rainwater harvesting.
The DC wants at least 50% of government wells to use the system this year.
