Spain Plans Stricter Asylum Rules for Ceuta Migrants

Spain Plans Stricter Asylum Rules for Ceuta Migrants

Spain is considering new rules for people who entered Ceuta during a large border crossing in July.

Ceuta is a small Spanish territory in North Africa.

The proposed rules could make asylum applications and appeals faster, but also stricter.

Some rejected applicants might have to appeal from outside Spain if their country is considered safe.

Applications could be withdrawn if officials cannot reach someone for five days.

People accused of violent or threatening behavior could immediately lose permission to stay.

The draft could also skip a normal review that includes a United Nations refugee agency representative.

Lawyers and aid groups say the plan could weaken protections for people seeking safety, while the government says it is still studying the legal issues.
