Uttarakhand HC: Territorial Army Lacks Jurisdiction in Illegal Mining Case
The Uttarakhand High Court is dealing with a case about illegal mining that is harming the Ganga River.
People have filed a case saying the mining is happening without permission and is dangerous.
The court asked the local military unit, the 27 Infantry Battalion, if they could help stop the mining.
The military said they support protecting the environment but they don't have the power to take legal action.
The case started because of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) which wants to protect the river, but the mining has continued despite the NMCG asking the state government to stop it.
The court will hear more details from a senior officer on June 23.
Uttarakhand High Court was informed that the Territorial Army cannot take legal action against illegal mining.
The court was hearing a PIL regarding illegal mining in the Ganga between Raiwala and Bhogpur.
The 27 Infantry Battalion supports environmental protection but lacks jurisdiction to act against mining.
Matri Sadan filed the PIL, alleging rampant illegal mining endangering the Ganga.
