Peru Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Mexico Over Asylum for Ex-PM
Peru and Mexico are like two countries that used to talk and work together.
But Peru has decided to stop being friends with Mexico, which means they've broken off diplomatic relations.
This happened because Mexico gave asylum, which is like protection, to Betssy Chavez.
She used to be a prime minister in Peru and is accused of helping a former president, Pedro Castillo, try to take over the country in 2022.
Peru's leaders are very unhappy and called Mexico's action an 'unfriendly act' and said Mexico has been interfering in their country's problems too much.
This isn't the first time Peru has been upset with Mexico; they previously expelled Mexico's ambassador when Mexico gave asylum to Castillo's wife and kids.
Peru feels Mexico shouldn't be helping people who are accused of trying to overthrow their government.
Peru has severed diplomatic relations with Mexico.
The decision was made after Mexico granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez.
Chavez is being investigated for her alleged role in a 2022 coup attempt by then-president Pedro Castillo.
Peru's Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela cited Mexico's action as an 'unfriendly act' and interference in Peru's internal affairs.
Relations between Peru and Mexico had previously deteriorated over Mexico's support for Castillo and asylum for his family.
