Valterra Platinum First-Half Profit Plunges on Production Issues
Valterra Platinum, a company that mines platinum, had a tough first half of the year.
Their profits went way down, by 91%, because a mine flooded and they had extra costs from splitting off from another company.
Because of this, they also reduced how much money they pay out to people who own stock in the company.
Even though one of their mines had problems, they expect to still produce a lot of platinum this year.
The price of platinum has gone up a lot this year, especially because people in China are buying more of it.
Valterra Platinum's first-half profit decreased by 91% due to flooding and costs from its spinoff.
The company's interim dividend was slashed to 2 rand per share, a 79% drop from the previous year.
Flooding at the Amandelbult mine reduced output by 45%, but operations resumed in June.
Production of refined platinum-group metals decreased by 22% in the first six months.
Platinum and palladium prices have increased significantly this year, with strong buying from China.
