Telangana Plans Oil Palm Push to Reduce Paddy Dependence

Telangana Plans Oil Palm Push to Reduce Paddy Dependence

Telangana wants farmers to grow more oil palm and less paddy.

Paddy needs a lot of water, which can be difficult when rains and reservoir inflows are low.

The government is discussing this plan with Reliance Consumer Products Ltd.

The plan would include growing palm trees and building facilities to process their fruit.

Palm oil, palm kernel oil and other byproducts could be produced.

Officials first suggested the Kodad-Huzurnagar area of Suryapet district.

Khammam and Kothagudem could later supply the larger project.

The goal is to give farmers another profitable crop while reducing pressure on water supplies.
