Heavy Rain Soaks Calcutta as Low-Pressure System Lingers

Calcutta received very heavy rain after a weather system stayed over the area longer than expected.

The rain started on Monday night and became strongest on Tuesday morning.

South Calcutta received more rain than northern areas.

Some roads and neighborhoods became covered with water.

Lightning and loud thunder accompanied the heaviest showers.

Weather officials said strong monsoon winds brought plenty of moisture.

Heat near the ground helped create powerful clouds.

The rain was expected to become less intense from Wednesday morning.
