Telangana Arrest Over Ambedkar-Critical Book Fuels Free Speech Debate
Hamara Prasad wrote a long Telugu book that questions common stories about Dr BR Ambedkar.
People who support Ambedkar objected to the book’s title, cover and ideas.
They protested in several parts of Telangana and complained to the police.
Police arrested Prasad before the book’s planned launch.
They also seized some printed copies, according to the state government.
A court is considering the legal issues surrounding the book.
Some people say unlawful material should be punished under the law.
Others say people should answer bad ideas with evidence instead of stopping the book because protests might happen.
Telangana Police arrested Rashtriya Dalita Sena founder Hamara Prasad on September 17, one day before his Telugu book launch.
The roughly 730-page book, Kalpitha Nayakudu, criticises established narratives surrounding Dr BR Ambedkar.
Protests and police complaints were reported across several Telangana districts over the book’s title, cover and contents.
Authorities told the Telangana High Court that Prasad was arrested and physical copies were seized to prevent an untoward incident.
The controversy has raised concerns that public pressure and threats of disorder could restrict controversial speech before courts determine whether it is illegal.
