Meta to Alert Parents on Teen Distress in AI Chats
Meta is introducing new features to help teens who might be feeling sad or in danger.
If a teen talks to Meta's AI about hurting themselves, the AI will try to help them and tell their parents if it thinks they are in trouble.
Meta worked with experts to make sure the AI understands when a teen needs help.
Parents can also set stricter rules on what the AI can talk about.
This feature is already available in some countries and will be available everywhere by the end of the year.
Meta will alert parents if teens show signs of distress in AI chats.
AI will proactively notify parents if a teen's chat indicates potential risk.
Every flagged chat will be manually reviewed before sending alerts.
Meta is developing capabilities to contact emergency services for imminent risk.
Parents can activate a stricter 'Limited Content' setting for teen accounts.

Privacy vs. Safety
Privacy Advocates
Teens should have privacy in their AI conversations, and parental alerts could lead to unnecessary interventions.
