Elon Musk unveils SpaceX plan for robot-built moon factories
A very rich man named Elon Musk runs a rocket company called SpaceX.
He wants to build factories on the Moon.
Robots would do the building work there.
The factories would make parts for special satellites called Starmind.
SpaceX wants to make one million of these satellites so they can look past Earth.
The robots would also make solar panels and radiators.
Solar panels give power, and radiators get rid of extra heat.
Musk wants to build a big machine called a mass accelerator on the Moon too.
A big spaceship called Starship would carry the robots and equipment there.
Around the same time, SpaceX shared its money numbers.
The company made $7.8 billion in three months, which is much more than before.
It still lost $541 million, but that loss is smaller than last year.
Starship is getting ready for its 14th test flight soon.
Elon Musk announced SpaceX's vision of building factories on the Moon using robots during the company's August 4 earnings call.
The lunar factories would initially manufacture components for SpaceX's Starmind AI satellite constellation, with a plan to make one million satellites.
Robots on the Moon would also produce solar panels and radiators, and be used to scale up manufacturing for a lunar mass accelerator.
SpaceX reported Q2 2026 revenue of $7.8 billion, up 92% year-over-year, with a net loss of $541 million versus a $1 billion loss a year earlier.
The earnings call was SpaceX's first quarterly report since listing on the Nasdaq on June 12, and EBITDA jumped 191% to $3.5 billion year-on-year.
No detailed plan has been released, but SpaceX previously said it may use Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots for future space missions, and Starship would transport equipment and payloads to the Moon.
