One in Four Indian Adults Obese
A new report says that about one in four Indian adults is now obese.
This means that 24% of women and 23% of men in India are either overweight or obese.
This is almost five times higher than it was 30 years ago.
The problem is worse in cities and varies a lot between different states.
For example, in Delhi, 41% of women are obese, while in Meghalaya, it's only 12%.
The report also says that obesity is costing India a lot of money, about USD 2.4 billion every year in healthcare spending, and it's reducing the country's economic output by about USD 28.9 billion.
The report suggests that India needs to focus more on preventing obesity to improve health and the economy.
Experts say that by using technology, data, and community action, India can reduce the burden of obesity and build a stronger health system for the future.
Nearly one in four Indian adults is obese, with higher rates in urban areas and significant variation across states.
In Delhi, 41% of women are obese compared to 12% in Meghalaya.
22.8% of children aged 6 to 16 in Delhi are obese compared to 13.6% in Maharashtra.
Obesity costs India about USD 2.4 billion annually in healthcare spending and reduces economic output by USD 28.9 billion.
Initiatives like Eat Right India and the Fit India Movement are helping to improve diets and physical activity.
